Directory Traversal in SAP NetWeaver Application Server (AS) for ABAP and ABAP Platform

Impact On Business

An authenticated attacker with low privileges can leverage a directory traversal flaw to overwrite a file which is otherwise restricted. On successful exploitation an attacker can compromise the availability and integrity of the system.

Affected Components Description

SAP NetWeaver AS for ABAP and ABAP Platform provide both the core runtime and development environment for all ABAP programs.

Vulnerability Details

Executable ABAP program SAPRSBRO in SAP NetWeaver AS for ABAP and ABAP Platform (SAP_BASIS software component) uses an absolute file path that is based on insufficiently validated user input, enabling attackers with low privileges to traverse the file system and overwrite unintended files including system-critical configurations, executables, and libraries. Successful exploitation can render the targeted system unavailable.

Solution

SAP has released SAP Note 3302162 which provides patched versions of the affected components.

The patches can be downloaded from https://me.sap.com/notes/3302162.

Onapsis strongly recommends SAP customers to download the related security fixes and apply them to the affected components in order to reduce business risks.
