Improper Authorization in SAP BEx (Business Explorer)
Impact on Business
An authenticated attacker with low privileges could gain unauthorized access to sensitive metadata within the SAP system. By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can enumerate system usernames, workbook identifiers, and workbook titles. This information disclosure could be used to facilitate further targeted attacks or to map out internal business reporting structures and user activities.
Vulnerability Details
A remote-enabled function module within the SAP Business Explorer (BEx) component, specifically RRMX_WORKBOOK_LIST_GET, does not perform sufficient authorization checks. This allows an authenticated user with low-level permissions to bypass intended access restrictions and retrieve a comprehensive list of workbooks stored on the server. The information returned includes sensitive metadata such as unique workbook IDs, titles, and the usernames of the owners or last modifiers of those workbooks.
Solution
SAP has released SAP Note 3481992 which provides patched versions of the affected components.
