Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) through Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) in BIC Document HTTP Handler
Impact on Business
Successful exploitation of the identified vulnerability enables an attacker to run malicious scripts in the browser of end users. This could cause website defacement, phishing attacks, or unintended requests being delivered to the vulnerable application server on behalf of the victim user.
Vulnerability Details
The HTTP handler of the BIC Document application is susceptible to reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) through Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF). Due to missing input validation and output encoding of untrusted data, attackers can inject malicious JavaScript code into dynamically crafted web pages. This is achieved by forging a request to an external server, exploiting a destination identifier passed in the URL query string. The application uses this identifier in remote calls, allowing an attacker to make the vulnerable server connect to an external system and return malicious scripts in the response. These scripts are then inserted into the HTTP response delivered to the client, executing in the victim’s browser.
Solution
SAP has released SAP Note 3611184 which provides patched versions of the affected components.
The patches can be downloaded from https://me.sap.com/notes/3611184.
